The small space in front of the Kuvuklia is dedicated to the Angel who appeared to the women with the joyful news of the resurrection of Jesus.“And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white garment; and they were alarmed. But he said to them: do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified; He is risen, He is not here. See the place where He was laid”. The space of the side chapel, or Chapel of the Angel, is small – 3.5 by 4 meters. In the center there is a pedestal with fragments of the stone that sealed the cave. The stone itself did not survive after the destruction of the church in 1009. The Chapel of the Angel is currently the only entrance to the Kuvuklia, and every day hundreds of pilgrims line up there to see and touch the burial slab where the body of Jesus lay.
