This 78-meter tower was built back in 1931. It became the terminal point of the cable car route that can take you from the Barcelona waterfront to Montjuic Hill, where there is a beautiful park, “Spanish Village,” the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and the famous Magic Fountain. It is worth noting that Saint Sebastian Tower and the fountain complex stretching from Montjuic to Plaza de Espana were built by the same person – the architect Carlos Buigas.
According to the plan, this tower was supposed to open two years earlier, in time for the World Exhibition held in Barcelona in 1929. But the designers misjudged the scale of the construction, and therefore the tower was commissioned late. After the opening, the civil war broke out, and the tower was used for coastal defense for some time. Having successfully coped with its unexpected task, it returned to its direct duties only in 1963.
Today this is one of the city’s quite popular places among tourists. After a breathtaking trip on the cable car, it is so pleasant to enjoy the views of Barcelona and the seaport from a bird’s-eye view. In addition, the tower houses an excellent restaurant. You can get to it not only by the “cable car,” arriving from Montjuic Hill, but also by taking the elevator located inside the metal support of the structure.
