This church is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Barcelona. Curiously, at the time of its construction it was significantly lower – the building was deliberately made short so that the cannons located in the Citadel could fire unhindered at ships in the port, and the church itself would not be damaged by that fire.
Later, when in 1863 the fortress was demolished and the beautiful Citadel Park was laid out in its place, it was decided to enlarge and expand the church. After this reconstruction it became three-aisled and two-domed.
It is important to note that there are two churches of Saint Michael in Barcelona, so as not to confuse people, the phrase "in the port" is usually added to the name of this church, since it is located in Barceloneta - the seaside quarter where fishermen, sailors, and dock workers used to settle.
Every year on September 29, a festival dedicated to Saint Michael is held in the square near this church. If you are nearby on that day – be sure to stop by – it is noisy and a lot of fun!
