In Piazzale Cadorna, not far from the railway station of the same name, there is a huge sculptural composition – “Needle, Thread and Knot”. Its creators are the famous sculptor and pop art classic Claes Oldenburg and his wife Coosje van Bruggen. Claes has extensive experience creating and placing giant objects in urban landscapes – enormous clothespins, pins, ice cream, rackets... But for Milan, he created a truly special art object.
According to the authors' idea, the new symbol of Milan embodies the hard work and talent of the city's residents; however, most Milanese perceive it only as a symbol of the “fashion capital.” “It is not true that fashion is born in Paris, it is born here, in Milan!” the locals claim.
The sculpture is made of fiberglass and steel, and the colors used – yellow, green, and red – match the colors of the Milan metro lines. Curiously, the art object itself is divided into two parts: the colossal Needle and Thread are located across the road from the Knot, which is no less impressive in scale.
