This fountain is located in the middle of Piazza Castello, right opposite the entrance to the famous Sforza Castle. It got its name because visually it really does resemble a large cake – the fountain has a round base, and the cascading jets of water look like the outlines of the layers of a wedding cake.
However, the history of the creation of this monument is far from as light and festive as its name. The initiator of the construction of this fountain was Benito Mussolini, who planned to hold meetings with veterans of the Ethiopian campaign near it. For a long time, the construction of the monument was alternately “frozen,” then started again, and sometimes even demolished altogether. Thus, in the middle of the last century, the fountain was almost completely dismantled, because one of the Milan metro lines was supposed to pass beneath it. Only at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries was it finally decided that the fountain by Sforza Castle would indeed remain.
As with many other outstanding fountains of the world, Milan’s “Wedding Cake” has a tradition – make a wish, toss a coin, and it will surely come true. We probably won’t be mistaken if we assume that most often people here wish to find the love of their life and live in a happy marriage for many, many years :)
