The Large Disk, or Disco Grande, is a work by the outstanding sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, measuring five meters in diameter. It was created from gilded bronze in 1973. It must be admitted that this disk rather resembles a flying saucer that arrived from the future and landed on its edge right in the center of Milan, in Piazza Meda.
Originally, the disk was equipped with a rotating mechanism, which attracted many locals and tourists, and especially children. However, this did not last long - later the mechanism was blocked.
The Large Disk by Arnaldo Pomodoro, like many of his other creations, seems to radiate energy - as if it had exploded from within. And, interestingly, at the same time it is distinguished by the strict geometry of its forms and detailed, almost jewel-like craftsmanship. By the way, the sculptor did indeed study jewelry making for some time.
Today, Pomodoro's works can be found all over the world: in front of the Royal Palace in Copenhagen, in the Vatican Gardens, in New York, Rome, and even Moscow! During Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to Italy in 1989, Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti presented him with a Solar Disk similar to Disco Grande as a symbol of friendship between the two states.
