French Street is one of Beyoglu's prettiest little detours - a short, steep lane just off Istiklal Avenue.
Updated for 2026: French Street still works best as an early-evening stop, when the terraces fill up and the lights come on. Expect a polished, lively atmosphere rather than a hidden local hangout.
Known locally as Cezayir Sokağı, it was reimagined in 2004 as a cafe-and-restaurant street. It's so steep it feels more like a staircase than a road, and nearly every step is lined with terraces, small eateries, and little shops. Bright awnings, sculptures, paintings, and small fountains give the whole place a deliberately Paris-inspired look.

The houses are painted in warm pinks and yellows, and the tiled steps add to the street's playful feel. After dark, the lamps and strings of colored lights give the lane a soft glow.
Getting there is easy: walk down Istiklal Avenue from Taksim Square to Galatasaray High School, turn left, and continue downhill toward the waterfront. At the first intersection, turn left again, and French Street will appear on your right.
