Updated for 2026: Charles Bridge is still one of Prague's busiest sights, so come early in the morning or around dusk if you want a quieter look and better photos.
The Crucifixion, sometimes called Calvary, is one of the best-known sculptures on Charles Bridge, standing near the Old Town Bridge Tower. The ensemble dates to the 17th century, but the monument on the bridge today is a copy; the original figures were moved to Prague museums long ago to protect them from the weather.
It shows Christ on the cross, with the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist at either side. One of its most striking details is the gilded Hebrew inscription beneath the cross, added later and impossible to miss.
There is an interesting visual echo across the bridge in the Pieta, which shows the mourning after Christ is taken down from the cross. There Mary Magdalene joins Mary and St. John. As you walk Charles Bridge, you will notice several pairings like this, with one monument seeming to answer another.
