The Fountain “Czech Musicians” is a sculptural composition of five two-meter bronze figures, as if frozen in a dance above an artificial pond.
Each of these statues represents one of the rivers of the world. The woman with the violin symbolizes the Danube, the man with the trumpet brings the Mississippi to life, the young man with the mandolin has “taken on” the Ganges, and the girl playing the flute represents the Amazon. Another sculpture, standing slightly apart from the others, is a man without an instrument, trying to free himself from the garments in which he seems to be walled up. This statue embodies the Nile.
All 5 figures are united by clothing that covers their faces and seems to bind their bodies. According to the idea of the creator of this composition, Anna Chromy, the clothing and the musicians' attempts to rid themselves of it symbolize a person caught in society's web.
It is worth noting that Anna Chromy is an Austrian sculptor of Czech origin. The Statue of the Commander in Prague is also her work. The pond in which the musicians' figures are placed, however, was created from a design by the Czech sculptor Jan Wagner.
