After you visit Duomo, don't rush off to Milan's next attraction; be sure to go up to the roof of the legendary cathedral as well - it is one of the best observation decks in the city. They say that in good weather you can even see the Alps from here!
Unlike the Duomo itself, access to its top is already paid, and going on foot will be a bit cheaper. Those who are ready to make the climb up five hundred steps should stand with their back to the cathedral's main entrance, turn right, and walk along the side wall. Those who want to go up by elevator will need to reach the apse end of the cathedral, i.e. the part exactly opposite the entrance.
The roof of the Duomo is worth visiting at least because from the ground it is simply impossible to get such a good look at the 3400 statues, 135 spires, 96 giants, and 156 gargoyles that adorn the cathedral. But once you are at the top - easily - you will find yourself in a real forest of countless columns, sculptures, spires, and statues. The impressions are indescribable - you will find nothing like it on any other roof in the world!
