Zero kilometer marks the starting point for road distances and serves to systematize postal and transport routes. Traditionally, the zero kilometer is located next to the central post office of the country's main city. The same was true in Minsk: until 1998, the zero kilometer marker was located near the Main Post Office.
However, during the reconstruction of Oktyabrskaya Square it was moved here, and now the zero kilometer is located exactly one kilometer from Belarus's main post office.
The memorial sign looks like a small granite pyramid about half a meter high. It is clearly visible from all ends of the square and the streets surrounding it.
The zero kilometer marker is decorated with bronze cartouches featuring images of a map of the roads of Belarus, quotes in Latin, and poems by Yakub Kolas. The base of the monument is paved with bronze slabs indicating the distances to the largest cities of Belarus and the capitals of neighboring countries.
