Victory Square, dedicated to the heroic feat of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War, is located on Independence Avenue. In its center rises a granite obelisk, the Victory Monument, 40 meters high.
The lower part of the monument is decorated with four high reliefs, which were created by different Belarusian sculptors: "May 9, 1945", "Partisans of Belarus", "Soviet Army", and "Glory to the Fallen Heroes".
The obelisk in the square was installed in 1954, and a few years later the Eternal Flame was lit at its base. Many people come here to honor the memory of the heroes and lay flowers at the foot of the monument.
Most of the buildings surrounding the square were erected in the 1950s. But Victory Square itself appeared back in the 1930s, although little of the development from those times survived after the war.
Not far from here is the entrance to the picturesque Central Children's Park named after M. Gorky, where you can enjoy many exciting rides or simply relax after a walk through the center of Minsk.
