On Piazza Venezia in Rome stands the grand snow-white Vittoriano monument, dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II - the first king of a united Italy.
The monument's other name is the "Altar of the Fatherland," but the Romans do not think much of it and come up with various nicknames, such as the "typewriter" or the "dentures." The thing is that, from an architectural point of view, Vittoriano is heavily overloaded with details: there are columns, bas-reliefs, and statues... For Romans, it is all a bit too much, pure eclecticism. But for visitors, Vittoriano makes an unforgettable impression.
At the front of the monument, the statue of King Victor Emmanuel II, seated atop his war horse, stands out. Beneath it is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
