Florentin was founded by immigrants from Greece in 1927. After the First World War, waves of anti-Semitism intensified in Greece, forcing Greek Jews to flee the country. New generations of the first settlers' families continue to live here, bringing their cultural shades to the neighborhood's eclectic appearance.
They also continue their grandfathers' family businesses - that is why there are so many ethnic restaurants and cafes, small charming shops, and unique craft workshops in Florentin District.
Numerous bars, pubs, and clubs operate here around the clock, and drinks flow freely because they are quite cheap. Tipsy students wandering in the middle of the night from one bar to another are a common sight in this neighborhood.
Such a laid-back atmosphere and the accessibility of entertainment venues made Florentin District a center for young musical groups, especially experimental and underground ones. Local clubs constantly host performances by emerging bands and singers.
