Not far from Jaffa Port, you can spot a small group of rocks in the Mediterranean Sea. It is believed that this is exactly where the story described in the ancient Greek myth of Andromeda and Perseus unfolded.
According to the legend, Cassiopeia, the wife of the Ethiopian king Cepheus, once went too far in her boasting, claiming that she was more beautiful than the Nereids - sea deities resembling our mermaids. Poseidon, the god of the seas, took offense and decided to stand up for his own, sending natural disasters and a terrible monster upon Ethiopia in his anger.
The people of the country were saved by an oracle: he proposed sacrificing the beautiful and young Andromeda, the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, to the monster. Under public pressure, the king resolved to commit this grave act.
Andromeda was chained to a rock amid the raging waves, and they began to wait to see what would happen next. Suddenly Perseus, the famous hero, appeared. Seeing the defenseless beauty on the rocks, he fell deeply in love with her and decided to take advantage of the hopeless situation of the Ethiopian ruling family by offering the king to kill the monster if he agreed to give Andromeda to him as his wife. And so it was done. Perseus prevailed, the girl became his wife, later the queen of Mycenae, and gave birth to nine children. Everything ended happily.
Nowadays, Andromeda Rock does not impress with its size, but it is a symbolic place that reminds us of the all-conquering power of love.
