Archaeological excavations in Jaffa have been underway for a long time. The most important finds and discoveries were made in the 1960s, when districts were being expanded and the dilapidated and often abandoned buildings of the old city were being restored.
To this day, before starting any construction here, it is necessary to first contact a special archaeological service, whose staff will conduct preliminary excavations at the site of the future building. After all, all the land here is filled with treasures so ancient that, in comparison with them, Jaffa itself looks young.
One of the most valuable finds of this kind is considered to be the Gate of Ramses II - the legendary Egyptian pharaoh. It was discovered precisely during preparations for the construction of an ordinary house. The historical monument dates back to the second millennium BC. That period is extremely interesting for historians and archaeologists: it was then that the first peace treaty in human history was concluded - between the Hittites and the Egyptians.
The Gate of Ramses II was built at the same time as the most ancient temples of Luxor. At that time, the first port cities began to appear on the western coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, one of which was Jaffa.
