To celebrate Hungary's millennium, a whimsical showpiece castle was erected in Budapest's Varoshliget Park in 1896, bringing together elements of a wide variety of architectural styles that copied famous Hungarian buildings.
The most interesting part seemed to be the section of the structure depicting Corvin Castle in Transylvania, also called Vajdahunyad. That is how this name became attached to the eclectic installation.
The public liked that building, so it was decided to rebuild it in earnest - in stone, which was done by 1908 according to the design of architect Ignac Alpar, to whom a bronze monument was erected nearby in gratitude for the work done.
The impressions from visiting Vajdahunyad Castle are beyond words! This unique structure incorporates many architectural styles, from Gothic to Baroque. The layout of the castle fully corresponds to the standards of fortress architecture: a water-filled moat surrounds it, and you can enter the grounds via a bridge. In late autumn and winter, the body of water is used as an ice rink.
Next to the palace stands a famous sculpture depicting the anonymous chronicler who wrote the "History of Hungary" in the 12th century. He holds a quill in his hand, and there is a belief: for genius to descend upon you, you need to rub this quill. Judging by how shiny it is, there must be an extraordinary number of geniuses in the world :)
