This is not just a market, but the market of all markets! Sorry for the tautology, but it is incredibly beautiful. Its unusual architecture makes it look like a palace from Russian folk tales. Patterns of red brick, ornate roof tiles, towers, huge arched windows… The impression is stunning!
It is not only the largest, but also the very first covered market in Budapest built on such a grand scale. The building was erected back in 1897 by order of the city's first mayor, Karl Kamermayer. Surprisingly, over all these years the Central Market has never once changed its purpose: from the very beginning it has served exclusively as a place for trade, although with such striking looks it could easily have become a museum or gallery.
Inside the building there are two main floors and one more – an underground one, where perishable food used to be stored, like in a cellar. Now all around there are household goods, food, souvenirs, and much more on sale. There are even a couple of cafes here.
While strolling along Vaci Street, be sure to stop by this market! Here, in the blend of aromas, colors, goods, and vendors' cries, you can feel the rhythm and soul of the city better than anywhere else. Even if you do not intend to buy anything, just walk through its aisles – it is a special pleasure unlike anything else!
