Have you ever wondered what this or that building would have looked like if a different architectural design had won the competition many years ago? In Budapest, you have a unique opportunity to find out!
On Kossuth Lajos Square, where the Hungarian Parliament building stands, you can see another structure built according to the design of Alajos Hauszmann. He did not win the competition for the Parliament design, but he still brought his idea to life by erecting the Palace of Justice - the very building whose pediment is adorned with a statue of Themis driving a chariot with three horses. It now houses the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum. It is considered one of the largest in Europe, as it contains more than 200.000 exhibits.
Several exhibitions are on display in the museum halls, two of which are permanent: one tells about the culture and traditions of the Hungarian people, and the other about the life of Hungarians, from primitive times to the beginning of civilization. Also, in the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum, you can see the everyday life of other peoples, countries, and continents, for example, Asia, Africa, America, and even Australia.
To better understand the purpose of the various objects, and at the same time hear interesting stories about the life of the Hungarian people, it is better to use the services of a local guide. He will tell you in detail about the особенностях national hunting, fishing, leisure, and entertainment.
