Founded in 1982, the Plyos Museum-Reserve is a unique combination of natural landscape, architectural, cultural, and historical attractions.
The total area of the museum-reserve is about 80 hectares, and the protected landscape zone extends over more than 20 thousand hectares. In total, several hundred monuments can be seen here - both natural and created by human hands.
The architectural and natural ensemble of the city of Plyos and its surroundings was formed over several centuries, beginning in the 18th century. The Volga River and the rugged terrain influenced the distinctive layout of the city streets and buildings.
Among the central attractions, the I.I. Levitan House Museum stands out, dedicated to the prominent Russian landscape painter who created about two hundred magnificent canvases in Plyos in the 1880s, which are still considered classics of landscape painting today.
You can also visit the Landscape Museum, which displays works by many famous artists of the past - Shishkin, Petrov-Vodkin, Savrasov, and others. Exhibitions of contemporary painting and various cultural festivals are regularly held here. No less attention is paid at the Plyos State Museum-Reserve to folk art and decorative and applied crafts.
