The miraculous power of Varvarin Spring, located in the village of Kupan near Pereslavl-Zalessky, has been known since ancient times. The spring with healing water gushing from the ground was discovered by a local deaf-mute holy fool, to whom an icon of the Great Martyr Barbara appeared, lying simply on the ground.
The villagers immediately believed that this place was holy and decided to build a chapel here. But they began to build it farther from the swamps, in a more convenient, dry place. They moved the icon there as well, but the next morning it had miraculously returned to the spring. Since then, the little chapel stood where it was meant to be - at the holy spring. Over time, word of the spring spread throughout the surrounding area, and people began to come here so they could wash away all their troubles, hardships, and illnesses.
With the coming of Soviet rule, the spring was destroyed and the chapel was burned down. The mechanized development of peat bogs in the 1940s spoiled the water and made it unsuitable. However, local residents succeeded in having a concrete pipe with an outlet for the flow of clean water coming from the depths installed as the well lining. In the 1990s, a new chapel and a bathing pool were built here so that everyone could come, bathe, and drink water from the holy spring.
