On the shore of Lake Nero, in the historic district of Rostov Veliky, there stands a fairy-tale house with carved window frames. In this small mansion, which once belonged to the Rykunin merchants, the House of Crafts opened in 2007.
Here you can get acquainted with traditional folk crafts, see museum exhibits and the works of contemporary masters. Items made by skilled craftsmen can not only be seen, but also purchased. Better yet, attend one of the many master classes, where you will be shown how these wonderful handicrafts are made and the ancient secrets of traditional crafts will be revealed.
At the House of Crafts, you will become familiar with such areas of folk art as black-burnished ceramics, painted whistles, artistic wicker weaving, woven lace, birch bark изделия, ritual Russian dolls, and Russian folk costume. Here you can learn the history of the creation of the national costume, and if you are lucky, even take part in a tasting of old Russian drinks: mead, sbiten, kvass, berry liqueurs.
The Rostov House of Crafts is famous for its cheerful festivals and folk festivities, for example, during Maslenitsa or Ivan Kupala. On the lakeshore, bonfires are lit, chastushkas are sung, folk dances are danced and round dances are led, while girls in kokoshniks treat guests to mead.
