The monastery's stone wall began to be built in the middle of the XVI century, and its construction lasted 10 years, which for such a powerful structure at that time was quite a short period. The wall was very strong, capable of withstanding a prolonged siege by enemy troops. Incidentally, it played an important defensive role in the XVII century, during the war against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders.
The original number of towers on the wall is not known for certain. According to the 1641 inventory, there were 12 of them.
One of the towers is called Zvonkovaya, and earlier it was Solyanaya because it housed a salt storehouse. It acquired its current name in the XVIII century, after a bell was installed on it that rang for seminarians at the beginning and end of classes.
Zvonkovaya Tower is located in the northern sector of the monastery wall, next to Krolichya and Uglovaya Towers. It is 16 meters high, and its base measures 10 by 11 meters. This tower also has military features – 51 loopholes are arranged on four tiers.
As for the architecture, the tower is rectangular, decorated with pilasters, arches, and belt courses on the facade, giving it a very elegant appearance. The tented roof looks the same as it did back in the distant XVI century.
