The Innsbruck City History Museum was established on the basis of the city archive in 2002. The museum and archive share the same building - a beautiful old mansion with bay windows and wrought-iron balconies, standing on the bank of the Inn River in the very heart of the Old Town.
The Innsbruck City Museum tells about different aspects of the city's history, from the XII-XIII centuries to the present day. The historical hall is dedicated to the founding of Innsbruck, the development of the city, cultural life, and the everyday life of its residents in different eras. It covers such important areas for every locality as medicine, sports, tourism, and the transport system. At the museum, you can learn how the work in all of these fields was organized and developed in Innsbruck.
Much attention is given to the history of the rulers of Tyrol, their lives, and deeds. The topic of World War II and the post-war period is also covered in detail. All of the exhibits in the Innsbruck Museum belong to the city archive, which provided photographs, documentation, and old drawings, plans, and lithographs so that everyone interested can get acquainted with the rich history of the region.
The second hall of the Innsbruck Museum is dedicated to outstanding artists of Tyrol. Their paintings are exhibited here, in particular landscapes and panoramas with views of the city and its surroundings in different centuries. The art hall also features historical photographs, old posters and postcards, notices, and placards.
