Innsbruck is an ancient city, with a rich history and an enormous cultural heritage of classical art. Contemporary art was overlooked here until the very end of the 20th century. Gallerist Peter Augustin set out to correct this unfortunate oversight, opening a small contemporary art gallery in the Pradl district in 1980.
The Augustin Gallery exhibited paintings by young and renowned artists from Tyrol, Austria, and all over Europe. Over time, the collection of paintings grew, as did interest in new trends in painting and the number of visitors to the gallery.
In 1996, Peter Augustin decided to move his gallery to the center of Innsbruck in order to be closer to the tourist routes. In addition, the new premises became much more spacious and made it possible to organize temporary exhibitions alongside the permanent display.
The delicate watercolors of Bernard Vogel and Rudolf Preuss stand alongside the bright, expressive paintings of James Rizzi and Claudia Prinz. Here you can see amusing caricatures by the famous rock musician Udo Lindenberg and actor-comedian Otto Waalkes, which prove that a talented person is talented in everything.
In addition to painting, graphic art, and artistic photography, the Augustin Gallery often exhibits handmade stained-glass tableware, designer jewelry, and, of course, sculptures and 3D models.
