The tall City Tower is one of the symbols of Innsbruck, and it can often be seen in photographs. This Gothic structure, 56 meters high, was built in 1442-1450.
The tower is located in the Old Town - the historical center of Innsbruck, surrounded by old houses. Nearby are its distinguished neighbors: Дом с золотой крышей, Старая ратуша, Колонна Святой Анны.
Until 1560, the City Tower was crowned with a pointed Gothic spire, which was later replaced with a charming dome. From 1529, the tower was officially considered a signal tower: two guards were on duty here around the clock, and they were obliged to warn the townspeople about fires, enemies, and other dangers, of which there were many in the Middle Ages. The last watch was kept in 1967, and after that these patrols were abolished as unnecessary.
Now the City Tower serves solely as an ornamental landmark of Innsbruck. Here, at a height of 33 meters, there is a convenient observation deck offering wonderful panoramas of the entire Old Town. To get to the top and take beautiful souvenir photos, you need to climb 148 stone steps of the spiral staircase.
The tower is adorned with a clock installed in 1603 by Эразмом Мельхиором.
