The high relief “Memory of Generations” welcomes all who have come to pay tribute to those who fell in the Battle of Stalingrad. The 17-meter wall depicts figures of people: men, women, children, and the elderly. They carry flowers and wreaths, the banners in the hands of the men are lowered, and people’s heads are bowed in reverence for the great feat of the Soviet soldiers. These people, representing different generations, are making their way to Mamayev Kurgan to honor all those who shed blood and gave their lives during the fierce fighting in these places.
“Memory of Generations” symbolizes eternal mourning for the fallen defenders of their native land. It is a memory that both the elderly and the young must carry in their hearts and pass on to new generations, together with reverence and respect for the heroism of their forebears.
The high relief “Memory of Generations” is the opening composition of the memorial complex. The people on the relief seem to be heading toward Walls-Ruins and the staircase leading up to Mamayev Kurgan.
Behind the high relief are 12 niches with granite urns, matching the number of Hero Cities. Each of them contains a capsule with soil collected from the places where the fiercest battles took place and rivers of blood were shed by the Soviet defenders of the Motherland.
Nearby stands a stele with an exhortation to future generations to come to the memorial, bring their children here, and, in dreams of the future, never forget those who remained here defending our right to a peaceful life.
