The rather unusual and unique Aplenzoo zoo in Innsbruck was founded in 1962 by Hans Psenner, a famous Austrian zoologist. What is unusual about this place is its location – it is situated at an altitude of 750 meters on a steep mountainside.
Note that at Alpenzoo you will not see exotic tigers, parrots, or monkeys: all the inhabitants of the zoo are exclusively native residents of the Alpine region. In total, the zoo has 150 species of animals and birds, with more than 2000 individuals, for whom comfortable conditions have been created on an area of four hectares, as close as possible to their natural habitat.
When creating the zoo, Hans Psenner was guided by the idea of preserving endangered species of Alpine fauna. Such rare birds as the bearded vulture and the northern bald ibis deserve special attention, as they are now difficult to encounter in the wild. Alpenzoo is also the only zoo in the world where you can see interesting bright birds – wallcreepers. Among the animals, the signature species here is the ibex – the Alpine mountain goat.
The zoo also displays a model of an old Tyrolean farm where livestock used to be bred.
