The Church of the Sacred Heart of Christ in Innsbruck belongs to the male monastic order of the Redemptorists. This order was founded by Saint Alphonsus de Liguori in 1732 to preach the Gospel to the poorest people, the outcast, and the suffering. That is probably why the site for the monastery was chosen near the hospital.
The parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Christ and the monastery attached to it were built in 1896. The construction was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sacred vows that Tyrol made in 1796 to the Sacred Heart of Christ, asking for help in the war against the advancing French troops.
The architecture of the monastic complex belongs to the Neo-Romanesque style, which is characterized by numerous arches and colonnades. The tall openwork bell tower of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Christ is visible from afar and is a true adornment of the surroundings.
Inside, the church is decorated with statues of Catholic saints, and on the high gilded altar stands a statue of the Sacred Heart of Christ: Jesus stands in a tunic, with outstretched arms, and a blazing heart on his chest.
The pulpit is decorated with marble bas-reliefs depicting the four evangelists. The high ceiling vaults of the church are painted with beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus.
