Salzburg's theatrical life is bustling with a variety of events. Each season - from September to June - audiences are presented with 375 productions, at least 25 of them new.
On the stage of the Salzburg State Theater, you can see opera, ballet, dance shows, and children's performances, and under one roof both the academic theatrical school and the modernist one coexist. The theater is a very important part of Salzburg's cultural life, and it could hardly be otherwise in Mozart's hometown.
In 1775, Archbishop Colloredo ordered the construction of a court theater on the site of a building where balls had been held since 1625. Various classical works were staged here irregularly, from time to time.
The theater began operating at full capacity after, in 1893, the duo of talented Austrian architects Fellner and Helmer built a new building equipped with the latest technology of the time. In addition to modern technical equipment, the theater acquired an astonishingly beautiful neo-Baroque home. The first work performed within the walls of the new theater was the overture from Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito".
Nowadays, the Salzburg State Theater is very active, collaborating with other cultural institutions - for example, together with the Puppet Theater it organizes joint performances for adults and children.
