At the top of Mönchsberg Mountain stands an amazing structure that inspires delight by its very appearance alone. This is the Museum of Modern Art Salzburg, opened here in 2004. Initially, the museum was based in a small old Baroque building in the Old Town, but by now most of the collections have moved to a new home.
The building on the mountain was specially designed for the museum, so everything here looks harmonious and natural. The competition for the best design and for the right to carry out the construction was announced in 1998. The team of Munich architects led by Hoff Zwink won.
The museum was built in three and a half years and became an excellent example of contemporary style and spatial organization for a wide variety of gallery needs. The exterior facade is covered with marble from Untersberg, and the individual parts are connected by vertical joints, the pattern of which was created using a computer program – chords from Mozart's aria “Don Giovanni” are encoded in the joint pattern.
The museum's four floors, in addition to exhibition halls with a total area of 2300 square meters, include an auditorium, several lecture rooms, and a museum shop. After fully enjoying the contemplation of works of art created by local and foreign masters, you can pleasantly spend time in the restaurant, from whose terrace a magnificent view of Salzburg opens.
