The castle and the surrounding landscaped park are a true gem of Aigen – Salzburg's most fashionable and expensive district.
The castle itself (or the palace, as it is often called) was built in 1402 and is a large country residence surrounded by outbuildings, servants' cottages, and stables. On the estate grounds there is also a small private church with a tall bell tower.
The castle grounds and the entire complex of residential buildings around it were purchased in 1922 by Count Revertera von Salandra, whose descendants still own Aigen today. Tourists are not allowed into the castle or onto the private property, but you are free to stroll through the large park adjacent to the castle.
Aigen Castle Park was laid out at the end of the 18th century and designed in the popular English style. The landscaped park gradually expanded and was enriched with new beauties created by nature and man. Today you can find secluded cool grottoes and elegant gazebos there, and perfect paths will lead you to wrought-iron bridges spanning mountain streams. In the shade of the trees you may discover a small waterfall or a path to a natural spring. Incidentally, according to legend, the water from the local springs has miraculous healing properties.
