On Oslo's station square, between the two station buildings – the old and the new – stands a square tower with a clock at the top. This is Trafikanten Tower, owned by the railway company.
At the base of the tower is the information center of the same name, where you can get any reference information related to getting around the capital or the country as a whole. At the Trafikanten information center, they will suggest the right route; here you can also get maps and guidebooks, find out timetables, and buy tickets or a travel pass for Oslo's trams, metro, buses, and ferries.
Trafikanten Tower was built in 1998, 11 years after the reconstruction of the capital's railway system and the opening of the Central Station – Oslo S. Quite modern, yet already a classic, the tower adorns the Station Square. During the day it looks semi-transparent, revealing a turquoise spiral staircase leading to the tower clock. In the evening, the tower lights up with neon light, and along with it the clocks on each of the four sides begin to glow, keeping late-arriving visitors to the city from losing track of time.
For visitors and city residents completely detached from reality, the tower will even tell them the day of the week. The tower's horizontal neon lighting is divided into five sectors, symbolizing the 5 working days – after every four red stripes, one white stripe lights up. On Monday only the lower sector of the tower is lit, on Tuesday the first and second, and on Friday the tower shines from bottom to top.
