Frogner sports stadium in Oslo was founded in 1901 at the initiative of the speed skating club "Kristiania Skateklub", and its official opening in 1914 was timed to coincide with the industrial and agricultural exhibition held in Oslo in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Constitution of Norway. At the opening ceremony, the famous speed skater Oscar Mathisen set two world records at once.
Winter sports are more popular in Norway than summer sports, and accordingly the stadium is especially popular in winter. Speed skating and bandy competitions are held here, including international events, since the artificial ice is of excellent quality. In summer, artificial turf is laid on the stadium, and the ice rink turns into a green field where football and American football are played.
Local residents often come here to skate, because this is the largest ice rink in Oslo, and there is enough room for everyone. If Brazilian children are given a football at birth, Norwegian children are given skates or skis. Almost everyone here knows how to skate.
Frogner Stadium is of great importance to Norway - many world and national records have been set here, and the best athletes trained and competed in this ice arena. Monuments to two legendary Norwegian athletes - speed skater Oscar Mathisen and figure skater Sonja Henie - stand near the stadium.
