Holmenkollen is one of the world's best ski resorts, located on Oslo's highest hill and famous for its giant ski jump, excellent trails, and the world's first Ski Museum.
The Holmenkollen ski jump is the latest designer project: a huge translucent structure rises 115 meters above the Norwegian capital, gleaming in the sun with steel and glass. The jump was not always so large and futuristic: it first opened in 1892 and has since been rebuilt 19 times. At the base of the jump is the Ski Museum, founded in 1923.
The museum will tell visitors everything about the history of the use of skis, which spans a full four millennia. One can hardly imagine the variety of shapes, sizes, and ways of using skis presented in the museum's exhibition.
In Norway, skiing is not even just a national sport - it is a means of transportation, a hobby, physical exercise, and also history, culture, and even science. After all, it was thanks to skis that the development and exploration of new northern territories became possible! A separate museum exhibition is dedicated to the use of skis in the polar expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. Another hall of the museum presents exhibits related to the Winter Olympic Games in Oslo and Lillehammer.
