DDR Museum is located in the very heart of East Berlin, not far from Museum Island. Its exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in the everyday life of the citizens of the German Democratic Republic. A typical apartment setting from those times is presented here, along with household items, and even the interior of a prison cell has been recreated.
The museum format is the most interesting kind - interactive, everything can be touched, felt, and turned around. All the shelves and cabinets open, and behind their doors there are sometimes very unexpected and curious things hidden - video recordings, the anthem of the GDR, and even an emergency government communication telephone between Berlin and Moscow.
Car enthusiasts will not be bored either - the DDR Museum features several models of vintage cars, such as Volvo and Trabant. They can also be touched, and you can even sit behind the wheel, though unfortunately you are not allowed to drive them.
This is exactly where teachers bring Berlin schoolchildren for a vivid demonstration of the dry facts from their textbooks. There is a restaurant of traditional GDR cuisine at the museum, where visitors are invited to complement their visual impressions with culinary ones.
