The Church of Our Lady of Peace — Frauenfriedenskirche — was built in memory of the victims of the First World War and consecrated in 1929. This unusual church in the early modernist style is located north of Bockenheim.
The building, erected according to a design by Hans Herkommer, combines elements of Expressionism and Bauhaus architecture. A distinctive feature of the church is the use of monumental mosaic panels for both exterior and interior decoration. The western facade greets visitors with an imposing 25-meter portal divided into three tall arches. The central arch is adorned with a statue of the Virgin Mary covered in mosaic.
The initiator of the construction was the German Catholic Women's Association, which proposed to “embody prayers for peace in stone” and honor the memory of those who fell on the battlefields. The activists managed to raise enough funds, but because of hyperinflation they very quickly lost their value, and the work dragged on for several years.
In May 1929, the church finally opened its doors to parishioners. However, during the Second World War, the building was very badly damaged. A fundraising campaign was launched again, this time for restoration. For each donation, the church offered to perpetuate on its walls the name of any German soldier who was killed or went missing in action in any war.
