In the linden-filled Esplanade Park, beloved by locals, you can find one of the oldest restaurants in Helsinki – “Kappeli”.
The history of this refined establishment began with a kiosk selling sweets and lemonade, which was set up here by the local confectioner Erngren. The shape of the roof made the stall resemble a church, which is why it was often called “Kappeli,” meaning “chapel.” The nickname stuck, and when a spacious and beautiful restaurant was built on this site in 1867, it was given the name familiar to the townspeople.
The popularity of the establishment grew with each passing year; it was famed as a place where you could learn the latest news and meet interesting people. At the end of the 19th century, an oddity appeared at “Kappeli” – a machine for cooling beer. The combination of a cold hoppy drink and the live music of the orchestra performing by the restaurant's summer terrace made it the most visited establishment in the city. And also the fact that during Prohibition you could buy tea with vodka here ;)
In the second half of the 20th century, popular musical groups played at “Kappeli,” and the bar stayed open until 4 a.m., and only those who had turned 24 were admitted here. This place became extremely fashionable among the local bohemian crowd.
