Opened in 1991, the Ahvara gallery soon became one of the leading contemporary art exhibition venues in Helsinki. In the first years of its activity, it paid great attention to Finnish artists and sculptors who, because of a lack of money, could not present their art to the public. On the other hand, the Ahvara gallery also found room for foreign masters unfamiliar to the Finnish public.
The right calculation did its job: little-known artists gradually became popular, and the gallery turned into a treasure trove of art objects with an almost elite status. However, support for young talents did not cease; on the contrary, it became broader, because many more resources and opportunities appeared.
The exhibition halls in the gallery are very spacious and bright, without any unnecessary decor aside from functional details. All attention is focused exclusively on art in all its manifestations. It is difficult to describe all the directions represented at the exhibitions — here you can see paintings of various genres, as well as sculptures, installations, light compositions, video and photo materials. What unites them is a unique form of realizing ideas and quality of execution.
