The 47-meter tower is one of the oldest structures in Frankfurt am Main. It is part of the 15th-century city wall, which has preserved its original appearance to this day. It is located in the very center of the city, not far from Bockenheimer Anlage park. Despite such an “open” location, the site survived all wars, and although the tower was reconstructed, its appearance remained unchanged.
The tower was built between 1400 and 1428, with Klaus Mengoz as the designer and Madern Gerthener as the architect. The neo-Gothic tower has 8 floors and two additional ones allocated for attic space.
The structure is crowned by a large spire surrounded by four small side turrets.
The facade is decorated with carved bay windows and stone eagles — symbols not only of the city, but of the entire country as well. At the level of the second floor there are two more pointed towers, and on the reverse side there is a covered balcony. The structure looks fabulous, like an illustration to children's works or a frame from a historical film.
