Before you is a reminder that Kaliningrad used to be the fortress city of Königsberg, with powerful defensive structures, forts, ramparts, and fortress walls. On Upper Lake there are twin forts – the Wrangel and Don towers, built back in 1853. One of them bears the name of the great military commander Friedrich von Wrangel, a field marshal general of the Prussian army. The three-story round brick structure with traditional square battlements hangs over the waters of the lake, creating an extremely picturesque scene.
At the beginning of the XX century, Wrangel Tower stopped being used as a defensive structure; part of the building housed a collection of the city's treasures – gold and silver jewelry. Art exhibitions, musical evenings, and creative meetings were held in the other rooms.
Today Wrangel Tower continues the tradition of musical performances – a variety of concerts and shows are often organized on its two stages. Inside the building there is an art salon, as well as souvenir and antique shops where you can buy something to remember Kaliningrad by.
In addition, on the grounds of the former fort there is a popular disco bar, a cafe with an open summer terrace, and a restaurant.
