The development of architecture, from a hut to modern skyscrapers, can be seen in this museum. About 400 thousand exhibits are presented here: models, drawings, sketches, as well as building interiors, furniture, paintings, household items — all of this is gathered under one roof for the public's enjoyment.
The concept of an unusual museum with an equally original design originated at the very beginning of the XX century, but the implementation of the project had to wait. It was realized only seven decades later: the museum opened in 1984. Architect Oswald Mathias Ungers decided to embody the idea of a "building within a building," for which he constructed a glass pavilion around a neoclassical mansion, adding large Ionic columns to it.
The museum hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The collection of antique drawings from the XVIII-XIX centuries is especially interesting. There is also a specialized library here, whose holdings amount to 25 thousand books and periodicals.
