The largest botanical garden in Frankfurt am Main and one of the largest in all of Germany covers an area of 22 hectares. This floral splendor opened in 1871 on the initiative of Heinrich Siesmayer, a renowned landscape designer of that era.
Nineteen years later, this was the very place where the famous Buffalo Bill held his show. A buffalo hunter and former soldier, he organized "Wild West" performances featuring Native Americans and cowboys, recreating their way of life. Rodeo, shooting, dances - all of this immersed the audience in the inexpressible atmosphere of an exotic culture.
Today, the Palm Garden is a series of themed pavilions with plants from different countries and continents. Here you can see both polar birch and a cactus from Mexico. Ferns and palm trees grow in the zone dedicated to the subtropics. The underwater world is represented in a specialized aquarium.
The tropical pavilion features forests, savannas, and deserts. In the 1200-square-meter cactus garden, you will get acquainted with American, African, and Canarian succulents. The subantarctic zone reveals its sparse, yet at the same time very vivid vegetation.
Of course, flowers are represented as well. You will learn everything about the familiar yet never-tiring royal flower - the rose - in the rose garden, where dozens of varieties grow. In June, the Festival of Roses and Light is held here. Illumination and music - this is how the flower exhibition, founded back in 1931, is designed.
In the botanical garden, you can take a boat ride and ride the little railway, as well as play golf. A cultural program in the form of musical concerts is also provided.
