The building of Elphinstone College, built in the Neo-Romanesque style with elements of English Gothic, is included in the list of Mumbai's architectural heritage sites and is considered a symbol of the cultural heritage of British India. Slender turrets, tall pointed windows with ornate cornices, and numerous relief decorations on the facade give the building the appearance of a luxurious palace rather than an educational institution.
Elphinstone College was founded in 1824 with money donated by representatives of Bombay high society. The Bombay residents established the National Educational Society, which was entrusted with organizing the education of Indian youth.
The main goal of creating the college was teaching English, as well as art history and European literature. The college was named after Mountstuart Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay in 1819-1827, who is considered the founder of the system of public education in India.
Elphinstone College rightfully enjoys the reputation of being one of the best educational institutions in the country, for among its graduates there are especially many famous Indian politicians, public figures, scientists, and entrepreneurs.
The college hosts student festivals famous all over the world, for example the annual TechTsar (Tsar of Technology), where talented students from Indian and foreign colleges share their knowledge and experience in the field of programming and information technology.
