The art gallery consists of 4 halls and is located in one of Mumbai's first concrete buildings. The building was constructed in the Art Nouveau style, and its recognizable feature is a facade with a white undulating concrete porch.
The founder of the gallery was Sir Cowasji Jehangir, an active public figure and politician. Jehangir was a well-known patron, and in addition to the art gallery, opened in 1952 and named after his son who died in an accident, he also founded a hospital, an institute of psychiatry, and a hall-museum of contemporary art.
Also considered part of the same complex as the art gallery are the country's very first Natesans antique shop and the Samovar cafe. The cafe is quite unusual for India's exotic capital, as it is decorated in the style of 1970s Soviet socialism.
