architectural monument (federal)The Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian is an Orthodox church built in 1687 in the city of Kostroma. It is located near the Ipatiev Monastery, in Ipatievskaya Sloboda on the street named after the writer Evgeny Osetrov.The first wooden church, erected in 1562, was destroyed in the fire of 1680. Construction of the new one began in 1681, with the blessing of Patriarch Joachim. Since the dimensions of the new church were significantly larger than the previous one, the site of the nearby wooden Church in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker, which had burned in the same fire of 1680, was also allocated for its construction. Construction of the church was completed in 1687, and on December 11(21) of the same year the newly built church was consecrated by the abbot of the Ipatiev Monastery, Archimandrite Theodosius.In the 18th century, the church was rebuilt—two new side chapels were added, one in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker (1706—1709), the other in the name of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God (1780).

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery is a men's monastery in the western part of Kostroma on the bank of the river of the same name not far from its confluence with the Volga. It belongs to the Kostroma diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery played a notable role in the events of the Time of Troubles. The Ipatiev Chronicle found there is named in honor of the monastery.It is first mentioned in chronicles in 1432, but may have been founded much earlier. The monastery territory consists of two parts: the Old and New Town. Both sections are surrounded by high stone walls. The Old Town has the shape of an irregular pentagon. The compositional center of the monastery is the monumental five-domed Trinity Cathedral; nearby stands a bell tower.In the postwar period, monuments of wooden architecture from all over the Kostroma region were brought to the monastery walls and an open-air museum was created. Beyond it stretches Ipatievskaya Sloboda, which in the old days belonged to the monastery; there the five-domed Church of the Holy Apostle John the Theologian (17th century) has been preserved.

The Kostroma architectural-ethnographic and landscape museum-reserve "Kostromskaya Sloboda" is one of the first open-air museums in Russia, located in the city of Kostroma.The main territory of the museum is situated behind the southern wall of the Ipatiev Monastery, on the Strelka, at the confluence of the Kostroma River with the Volga. At present, this area is the main exhibition zone of the Architectural and Ethnographic Museum.
