The Kostroma Museum of Jewelry Art is probably the city's youngest museum collection – it opened its doors to visitors in early autumn 2013. But the tradition of jewelry craftsmanship in Kostroma is one of the oldest in all of Russia. Jewelry made from precious metals was crafted in this region as early as the Middle Ages, and today enterprises in Kostroma Oblast produce no less than a third of all the country's jewelry.
The museum is located on the first floor of a historic building dating from the 18th century. Its collection includes up to 500 exhibits representing different eras – from the 17th century to the present day. These works of jewelry art belong to different schools and periods, but they are united by the undeniable talent of Kostroma's masters.
In addition to the precious pieces themselves, the museum allows visitors to see jewelers' tools – both antique and modern – and study the techniques used in working precious jewelry. The exhibition is organized in a very interesting way – with models, installations, and an originally designed interior.
