Fairy-tale creatures, fantastical plots, folk crafts – all of this is brought together in the Les-chudodey Museum, which is located in Kostroma, on Ostrovsky Street.
Since ancient times, the forest was considered a source of riddles and mysteries in traditional Russian beliefs and legends. Leshy, Baba Yaga, Vodyanoy – characters from fairy tales who lived, if not in the thicket, then somewhere nearby. Therefore, the decision to create a museum that would fully reveal the significance not only of the forest, but of everything connected with it, seems quite natural.
The creator of the Les-chudodey Museum, Natalya Pavlovna Zabavina, is well known in Kostroma thanks to the Museum of Flax and Birch Bark that she opened in 2005. The new collection also features various exhibitions devoted to folk decorative and applied arts. Here you can see handicrafts made of wood and birch bark and learn the secrets of how they are made.
The museum building is a fairy-tale two-story house with many wooden elements. Visitors are immediately immersed in the world of mythology – they are greeted by characters from Russian legends and fairy tales.
The museum’s main focus is working with children, teaching them traditional artistic crafts in an engaging way. In addition to exhibitions, various master classes and educational events are regularly held here.
