Fort is the oldest district of Mumbai, where modern buildings stand alongside unique structures from the colonial era, dating mainly from the 18th-19th centuries.
The district got its name thanks to the powerful fortifications built by the British after this part of India passed to them from the Portuguese colonizers. Most of the fortifications were destroyed, but the modest remains of Fort St. George can be seen on Mahatma Gandhi and Dadabhai Naoroji streets.
Today, Fort is a business district. But it attracts tourists not because of the Bombay Stock Exchange or the Reserve Bank of India, but because of its historic landmarks. The starting point of all excursions is usually the famous Flora Fountain, located on Martyrs' Square, the central part of Fort. The square is surrounded by a whole շարք of interesting buildings. The most remarkable of them is St. Thomas Cathedral, a magnificent example of English architecture that appeared in 1718.
The majestic Town Hall building, built in 1833 by Thomas Cooper near the docks of the East India Company, is considered one of the finest examples of Indian neoclassicism. In its vestibule, marble sculptures depicting the governors of Mumbai from different eras are on display.
Walking along Dadabhai Naoroji Road, on the adjoining streets you will see many restaurants, playgrounds, and movie theaters. This is an excellent place for shopping and especially for buying pirated software.
