About 160 bird species live in Dongzhai Harbor, including those that come here to winter. In the “cold” season, you can observe tens of thousands of birds here, painting the water’s surface, the sky, and the trees with the bright colors of the whole world.
This heavenly haven for birds is located in the famous Chinese reserve “Mangrove Forest”. Unique evergreen broadleaf trees grow here; these trees are found in the tropics and at the equator along coastlines, in tidal zones. High humidity, salty water, oxygen-free soil - mangroves have adapted to survive in such extreme conditions. Moreover, they have learned to provide oxygen to all living things around them.
The “Mangrove Forest” reserve stretches across 3.3 thousand hectares in the city of Haikou. At high tide, the trees are submerged in the water, leaving only their roots above the surface.
You can explore the surroundings by boat, or take a walk along the pedestrian paths. In the recreation gazebos, you will be offered refreshing coconut juice or milk and chilled tropical fruits.
We recommend trying local seafood dishes here, and also be sure to try the rice cake.
